Families
Family therapy is a type of counselling that helps family members improve communications, solve problems, and resolve conflicts in a healthy way. The therapy aims to create a stronger, more supportive family unit by addressing issues that affect the whole family, like misunderstandings, emotional struggles, or behavioural problems. We offer therapy for small family groups (up to five people) with the children aged 11 plus.
The counsellor meets with the family together and sometimes individually or in dyad (twos), to understand the dynamics, or what is going on, between family members. They create a space for everyone to express their thoughts and feelings openly and feel listened to.
The counsellor will use various techniques or interventions and may teach skills like listening, learning how to resolve conflict, and how to build empathy.
Family therapy is not about blaming anyone, but rather about finding better ways to support each other and deal with challenges as a family unit.
Family therapy can be helpful for issues like:
• Parent-child conflicts
• Sibling rivalry
• Coping with major life changes (like divorce or loss)
• Dealing with mental health or behavioural issues
• Strengthening relationships after trauma
It can help to:
1. Improve communications
2. Solve problems
3. Address family roles and dynamics
4. Help manage conflict
5. Build supportive relationships
6. Help families cope with challenges
Family therapy can be short-term, focusing on specific issues, or it may be ongoing for families facing more complex or long-term difficulties. It’s a collaborative process, helping families work together to create healthier, happier and more functional relationships.
