Further details

This short course aims to cover the following areas:

  • unpacking our prejudices
  • best practice for non-judgmental working with kinky people
  • difference and the need to explain it
  • consent, power and boundaries
  • the risks that attach to being kinky: physical, emotional, social, legal,

Originally planned as a one-day workshop, this 3- evening course will allow the opporutnity for participants to undertake directed reading, video and reflection on the material in between sessions.

Bay Whitaker, who has been involved in Pink Therapy advanced clinical discussion groups on working with kinky clients for over 10 years, has several years experience of training and offering CPD in this area.  She says "growing up knowing I was excited by S&M, as we used to call it, was a deeply shaming experience, in the pre-internet world.  People who are into BDSM and related fetishes often have to overcome the prejudices and assumptions of others.  As recently as 2000, there was very little academic writing about BDSM, and what there was at that time still saw these kinks as pathological and often associated them with criminal behaviour."

Since those days, thankfully, there has been a real change in attitudes to kink.  Yet many kinky people are still very wary of disclosing their sexuality, given the extent of prejudice that still persists.  Working with this client group can easily go wrong.  This short course aims to help professionals to avoid pathologising kinksters, and to promote and enhance our own levels of acceptance of consensual kink.
